|John Wilkes Booth, american actor, southern sympathizer
Shot while on the run, in Port Royal, Virginia, by a union
soldier, at The Garrett Farmhouse. He died on the front
porch. His last words, uttered while staring at his shaking
hands, were, "useless~useless." Booth, a conservative,
right wing, racist, was intent on taking down The U.S.
Government, in an effort to help Robert E. Lee at
Appomattox Court House.
Many coincidences occurred during this whole string of
1. Lincoln had seen Booth perform at Ford's Theater, once
before. During the play Booth shook his finger at Lincoln
and stared directly at him. Abe's sister-in-law, remarked,
"Mr. Lincoln, he looks like he meant that for you." Abe
replied, "He does look pretty sharp at me..."
2. Booth had been arrested in St. Louis, Missouri, earlier
that year for making treasonous accusations about Abe
Lincoln and The Union Government. He was required to
take an oath of alliance, before being released from jail.
John Wilkes Booth is buried in Green Mount
Cemetery, in Baltimore, Maryland, in The Booth Family
Plot. By request of his family, his grave has remained
marked by a plain, unadorned tombstone without a name
or any other identifying markings on it. Visitor's have
been putting Lincoln Head Pennies on his tombstone
